The Nobel Prizes were established at the bequest of Alfred Nobel, a Swedish chemist, engineer and inventor of dynamite. The first Nobel Prizes were awarded in 1901. These prizes are awarded during a formal ceremony held annually on December 10, the anniversary of Alfred Nobel’s death.
The Nobel Prizes are awarded in six fields : Peace, Literature, Physics, Chemistry, Physiology or Medicine, and Economic Sciences. The awarding institutions are:
- Physics and Chemistry: Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences
- Physiology or Medicine: Nobel Assembly at the Karolinska Institute
- Literature: Swedish Academy
- Peace: Norwegian Nobel Committee (Oslo, Norway)
